Post April's fools progress report

This year's April project was a lot of fun. It took a couple months worth of lunch breaks to write the script. At first, it was going to be a complete text adventure, with room structure, inventory and events. But it was going to be pretty complex to produce, way too much time for a side project.

Anyways, as for the progress of these couple weeks:
Music production continues. Creating the right atmosphere and choosing the right instruments is quite a challenge, especially with the last couple songs.

Also, the intro sequence is mostly done. There's a very brief Super Metroid style text intro describing the mission, followed by some brief cutscenes of Samus arriving at SR388. The timing is still being tweaked, and the music for this sequence requires the exact duration of the intro, so I can properly sync it.

As always, thank you for following the project, and for all the support.

You are adding an intro and cutscene. That is awesome, I remember I suggested that a couple posts ago. Did you actually follow my advice or did you have that planned already. Anyways, it will make this game even better and you are the best. If I had any idea how to make a game, it wouldn't even come close to how awesome AM2R is. This game repeatedly blows me away with every update. The first one I played was 1.2 I think. Each area I think is as good as it gets, but then the next area blows the previous areas away. The latest one with that whole escape sequence was epic and I loved every moment of it. Stay strong Doc and take your time. You have spent too much time to release a half broken game. I don't mind waiting. Make it as awesome as you can.

As I always write on every post you make: I love your remake, more than every 2d Metroid. I'm being sincere right now. IMO, best freakin 2d Metroid. Nintendo should be ashamed to not even think about doing it that way. you are truly talented. I can't wait to play the final version of this. as I mentionned before, I would gladly help you for localization if you need (french).

Love the game, been here since a little bit before the beam system change.

While I do like the music and admire your appreciation of good atmosphere, I'd let you slap the malo mart theme for the rest of the game and replace all sound effects with 8-bit pokemon cries if it meant it was finished sooner.
Unknown said…
so any chance we can get some clips of this awesome music you are talking about? I feel like that makes up about 1/3-1/2 of a game is if it has fantastic music. looks like I should look into what the old school stuff was since I don't remember much of it. lol. ;)

Just read that a couple of fans that did a Legend of Zelda tribute project to upgrade the visual quality and celebrate the 30th anniversary of the series got shut down by Nintendo. I got worried about this project and phew! All's well still. If Nintendo shuts this down I'm going to lose all respect for them. How petty it is to shut down rather than embrace and be happy that after so many years there's still so much fan love and creativity and a willingness to support and show their appreciation through tributes and things like like "Let's Plays". And if nobody's making money off the free to play tributes/etc, what's the problem? No money, no dice? Sheesh...

Doc you truly are the man. Honestly I can't even remember when I started following your project, but when I did I was still in high school. I'm close to graduating college now. I've never seen anyone so dedicated to their passion and a project like you are. You're freaking awesome man. Just played the 1.4 demo ( only demo I actually invested time in and played) I don't think Nintendo could have done a better job. This is some phenomenal work. Keep up man you're amazingly talented.

Sincerely,
A fan

Cannot wait for this to be completed. Metroid 2 was the first Metroid game I ever played and I was instantly hooked. Any chances at all to get a Raspberry Pi/RetroPie compatible port? It would be absolutely excellent so that it could be tied in with projects like Cristov9000's SuperGameGirl or one of Adafruit's many portable console projects.

Damn I been following this project since like 2009 (idk but it's felt like ages) and I'm glad that it's slowly getting there rather than being left out incomplete. Heck the first time I found this game I was in elementary school watching TAS speed runs of Metroid: Zero Mission at my dad's store and somehow came across this. Now I'm a junior in highschool that hasn't had a taste of metroid in years. Tonight will be the first time I've played anything metroid related in about 8 years when I play the demo to the game. I can't wait for the full game to release <3.

Keep up the good work thanks dude

I'm so so so infatuated that this Metroid 2 Remake is almost done!!
I have red all the posts on this web page and I know that it still has things to be done like:
Music,Intro Scenes,sprites etc...
Besides all that my intention in this comment is that I may now where the Final Place takes the place.Note: I may be wrong, this is not 100% correct.
I think that the Final Place takes the place in the Surface area in the Eastern side of the Surface, because when I was about to complete the latest demo, I started filling the map for 100% of course, but when I got to the Eastern side of the Surface, I saw that there was a corridor/passageway down.I tried to destroy the blocks blocking my way by beam, bombs, missiles, super missiles and even power bombs. They did nothing to it.
That may be where Final Place takes the place. OR in the Mining Facility in the first drill- like vehicle, because there is clearly an Morph Ball-corridor in there, but it's blocked too and it cannot be destroy by any weaponry you have now or any earthquake what has happened or will happen in this demo.
So that's about it!
Good work, Doc!
We hope that you will make AM2R as awesome as you can!
Don't hurry about the time when the remake "should" be ready.
Just sit back and relax and take your time with this game!!

For all the love for this remake

Great to hear this is still being worked on.

Hey Doc, I hadn't played in about a year or so, and totally missed out on the new area you introduced in 1.4
I thought that the 'Mining Facility' was way too easy and 'The Tower' totally makes up for it! That security bot had me stuck for a minute until I learned his random patterns, I was surprised when I beat him though because the missile/laser cannons fix themselves after they are destroyed. There was no indication as to the state of the boss destruction after the shields. I'm really looking forward to a newer test release with another area to explore. I recently heard about Nutendo shutting down a 3d remake of the original Zelda, so please, be safe, and no matter if you later have to change any copyrighted works, we still love this game and its so much more Metroid that Nutendo could ever give us right now.

Hey Doc, you've done an excellent job so far with this project, ever thought of calling the project Metroid 2: planet annihilation. Just a suggestion of course, but that seems to have a nice ring to it. Keep up the good work, can't wait to see omegas and the queen in action.

It certainly deserves aproper name. Maybe not the one you suggested but something other than am2r; this really isn't just another remake.

super metroid is next project?, it will be great

This looks very cool but it's crashing out as soon as I get hit by an enemy so it's obviously got a bug or two that still need to be fixed, and pretty major ones at that.

I'm using a Windows 7 PC so I don't know if that has anything to do with why it might be crashing.
